DPP Preparation

Companies should prepare for the European Digital Product Passport process as follows:

• Companies will need to establish central data repositories to report all data about their products to the EU and integrate them with additional traceability data.
• Implementing the DPP will require a technical solution to collect all data related to the products manufactured and distributed.
• By assigning unique digital identities (UIDs) to all physical components and materials, data will be collected and associated with the UID whenever there is an issue with the product throughout the entire supply chain journey and life cycle.
• This unique identifier will be included in a web URL via an RFID tag, QR code, or a combination of both. The product's DPP will be displayed and the data accessed via the link. The DPP will be kept live after production and updated throughout the product's entire life cycle.
• The DPP will combine component and material traceability data from the supply chain with production data, and each product will be marked with an alphanumeric identifier. This identifier will be unique per product produced or per product group.

 

Responsibilities of Internal Technical Teams

 

	They should implement the GS1 Digital Link application along with the GTIN code and associate GS1 with the physical product.		Instead of relying on legacy ERP systems, they should implement scalable shared UIS/EPCIS repositories. This will be necessary both to improve the consumer user experience and to accelerate IT response processes at lower levels
	Within GS1, they should take measures to prevent counterfeiting and fraud by using unique IDs instead of serial numbers.		They should improve factory traceability systems to encompass recycling events, from raw materials to finished products.
	They should switch from pre-programmed RFIDs to UIDs compatible with a centralized system		They should centralize data from various IT systems, including EU Digital Passport requirements.
	They should implement the GS1 Digital Link application along with the GTIN code and associate GS1 with the physical product.		They should deploy the IT systems necessary to securely share data with relevant internal and external sources.
